Chronicle To Books Nadja

683. Nadja, André Breton
Nadja (1928), the second book published by André Breton, is one of the iconic works of the French surrealist movement. It begins with the question "Who am I?"

It is based on Breton's actual interactions with a young woman, Nadja, over the course of ten days, and is presumed to be a semi-autobiographical description of his relationship with a mad patient of Pierre Janet. The book's non-linear structure is grounded in reality by references to other Paris surrealists such as Louis Aragon and 44 photographs. The last sentence of the book ("Beauty will be Convulsive or will not be at all") provided the title for Pierre Boulez's flute concerto ... explosante-fixe. ...

Column Regarding Books Nadja
I was recently told a story that was so stupid, so melancholy, and so moving... The misty mood of André Bretons masterpiece of surrealist literature, Nadja is that of a dreamlike vision that is so shattering, sad, mysterious, and beautiful that even the rambling asides of Bretons writing are unable to tarnish its strange, absorbing impact. A foggy narrative married with long stretches of philosophical musings on the part of Breton, a king of the Surrealist movement, the novel focuses largely on

Really going to have this one again, as I simply don't yet know what to make of it. Nadja is certainly a strange, mystifying and unique book, that I suppose typically could only have come out of France. How to classify Nadja? Is it a novel? Or maybe creative non-fiction? In the easiest terms possible Nadja is a kind of love story written with objective Philosophical Prose set around Breton's enchantment with a liminal, odd young woman who seems to him the living embodiment of surrealism. Based

Beauty will be CONVULSIVE or will not be at all.I found this artful. It worked on a cloudy Friday, a holiday from work. Shorn of ambition and venturing out for a pint (or two) of Czech pilsner. A man of letters encounters a beguiling woman. Something like synchronicity develops, though with blurred edges that suggest a chemical imbalance. This brief novel reaches out to other works, other authors. There are plenty of photographs and drawings from the mysterious Nadja. The capricious perforations

I really should have liked this much more than I actually did: it's French, written in the early 20th Century, and involved a lost and tragic waif selling cocaine and her body in order to get by in Paris in the 1920s. HOWEVER. Well I suppose I have just had enough of pretentious French writers and their new clothes. I admire certain innovations in the book: that it was firstly a pronouncement of the Surrealist ideals, and as such mae no claim to having structure or answers or justifications; it

Bretons Nadja reads like a blog. Of course in 1928 blogs didnt exist, so this rather thin tome which unfolds like a collage of mixed media must have erupted on the scene as avant garde vogue. Of surrealism, naturalmente. Andre Breton, writing as Andre Breton, spends the first half of the novel meandering through the streets of Paris, posting photos of his favourite haunts, and namedropping par excellence. Of course, if this is read like a blog, then there no harm in the fact that his famous

The beauty will be CONVULSIVE or will not be.This sentence closes the first surrealist novel. A diverting book. At the high school, I read the classics, fines analyzes psychological, meticulous description, rigorous plan. In Nadja nothing of all. There is a plan in 3 parts or anecdotics things dominate. The meeting with Nadja and the character of Nadja himself are in the final analysis rather secondary. No description, a photograph replaces it. Nadja lived at "Hotel des grands hommes", so
